Wonders happen when... / Miracles happen then ...
... When you are ready to face them.
... When you're ready.
Once (after a really frightening flight, almost kissing the ground) I said I will never ever fly with Garuda Indonesia again!
Another time (after my forth trip to Bali last year) I declared: «I'm done with Bali!»
Well, life proved me wrong and this time in a very nice and generous way: I accidentally (thanks to Marina!) Won round-trip plane tickets to Bali by ... Garuda Indonesia! Business Class!
Leaving on Saturday, August 28. Thrilled to get back to the Ocean (still scared of flying with Garuda though).
One day (after a terrible flight, almost kissing the ground), I said: "Never again in my life I'm not going airline Garuda.
At another time (after my 4 th trip to Bali last year), I stated that all - now I have just enough of Bali.
Experience has shown that I was not right, and a very nice way: I accidentally (thanks Marina!) Won the round-trip airline tickets to Bali ... Garuda! Business class!
I fly on Saturday, August 28. In anticipation of a new meeting with the ocean (and fly Garuda still strashnenko)

Zhujiajian Diaries / Notes on. Chzhutszyatszyan
Ningbo «local» surfer Jon Sims has sent a new update on surf in ZhiJiaJian:
There is a swell this weekend but it is coming from the south as it has been since wednesday. I actually went for a surf on wednesday afternoon and it was quite small ... A few sets coming thru but no power. A good beginners break but not much else.
Funnily enough a «life guard» walked up to where I was surfing and started blowing his whistle until someone wiser filled him in. The silly thing was the waves were so small that he could have pretty much walked out to where I was and chatted with me.
The way things are shaping up, the surf this weekend looks to be about the same, maybe a tad bigger but it is probably going to be blown messy ...
I'll probably still go though ...

Surfing in Zhujiajian this weekend / Cerf Island Chzhutszyatszyan this weekend
Yesterday I received an email from Jon, a Ningbo expat who is the expert on surfing in Zhoushan / Zhujiajian Island area, saying that it looks like good surf in Zhujiajian this weekend. We haven't met in person yet, but I really appreciate Jon's surf updates. So if you are in Shanghai and thinking where to go to catch some mellow waves and relax on the beach this weekend, Zhujiajian seems to be a nice option.
Yesterday I received email from Jon, expat from Ningbo, who knows surfing the Zhoushan island area / Chzhutszyatszyan. In his letter stated that the forecast for this weekend is coming good in the surf Chzhutszyatszyan. He and I had never met in person, but I'm grateful to him for surf information from the field. So if you are in Shanghai and think where to go to on weekends to catch some waves and relax on the beach, then Chzhutszyatszyan can be an excellent option.
Here are some directions and tips on ZJJ-surf from Jon (thanks man):
A few tips for CHTSTS Surf from John in the original (thank you):
If you want to go to Zhoushan Island, go to Ningbo and then cross the bridge to Zhoushan. Cross Zhoushan to Zhujiajian Island. Then to Dong Sha. The best part is the Northern part of dong sha.
Waves tend to break best with South Easterly winds. Easterly can work too. Google Earth will show you location but my version has not yet included the Zhoushan Bridge.
Alternatively you can fly directly to Zhujiajian from Shanghai.
There are busses from Ningbo Jiangbei Bus terminal which will take you to Shenjia Men, and from there you catch another taxi or bus.
I live next to the exit of the bridge at Zhenhai so it takes me just over one hour to drive there.
You were here last year, september. The swell was messy.

The wetsand surf forecast is a little easier to read ... Better colours but both of them tend to predict the same thing. Wetsand tends to forecast swell while magic seaweed seems to actually forecast the surf ... Obviously surf is harder to forecast for each particular beach!
The beach breaks best on a rising tide from low tide upwards.
Winds tend to be onshore but every now and then amazing things happen.
Winter surfing is not too bad at all ... A full length spring suit (2 or 3mm) is enough as water temps don't dip much below 15deg C by the looks of things.
Taylor Steele's Castles in the Sky
On May 18, a Premier of Taylor Steele's new movie, Castles In The Sky Was Held in LA. I'ma big fan of Taylor Steele's works.
If you look at the poster for Castles In The Sky you will see that it stars India, Peru, Vietnam, Africa, and Iceland. A bit odd, considering that there are some big name surfers in the movie, including Mike Losness who went on a Surf Trip to Vladivostok fall 2009. But while the surf stars in the film are A-listers, they aren't really the stars; the film is more about the land and cultures that they visit - a visual journey through a global tapestry. The imagery that Mr. Steele Has captured is full of color, life, and Culture from all Parts of the globe © http://www.surfinghandbook.com
May 18, the Los Angeles premiere was one of the most anticipated surf film me Castles in the Sky from Taylor Steele (Taylor Steele), whose work I generally very much. In the Castles in the Sky shows India, Peru, Vietnam, Africa and Iceland. In search of rare STC corners and work on the film took 3 years. China is now, unfortunately, missed the number of "corners". Well, the truth is the precursor of Castles in the Sky - Sipping Jetstreams-already lit Hong Kong and Hong Kong for 13 years, as China.
In the film, which stars surfers with great names, including those known to us by surf trip to Vladivostok Lozness Mike (Mike Losnes). Clouds in the Sky - is not just a surf video is a visual journey, immersion in different cultures of the world and a beautiful surfing in the performance of both pro, and local surfers. The painting, full of color, life and the waves.
Waiting on DVD!

Reflections of searching for surf in Russia-Afterword / In search of Russian-wave-Afterword
Just wanna add a few more pictures taken during our trip to Vladivostok and surrounding beaches and the autographs left by some of our surf-guests.
Simply add to the history of a few photos from our adventures on the coast and Vladivostok, as well as autograph requests left by pro-surfers in the memory.
Thank you to all surfers and new friends from Vladivostok,

In the search for Russian Waves

"No!" - Tamozhnitsa plump with curly hair, wrinkled her nose and looked gloomily from behind the glass booth passport and visa control airport Vladivostok, lifting open passport photographer Chris Burkard at eye level. "Bad" - she hissed into his address, pointing a long red fingernail at the date of entry of his Russian visa, costing $ 236. Looks like the comrades in the United States sealed a date, when should arrive Burkard, so that formally enter the Russian Federation, he was supposed to only 2 days.
Russian voice: Our guards have proved very principled. And vigilance, what can I say - a mistake in the visa did not notice any Russian Consulate, nor the firm, who formalized the visa nor the airline nor the passport control in the United States, nor myself, Chris, but from the watchful Russian Service she hid. 3:00 negotiations with them at the airport gave 0. Actually, not quite 0. And as much as 5 pages of the protocol on the "citizen's arrest of Chris Burkard, by negligence of its American trying to cross the Russian border without a valid visa. By the way girls, a protocol, marital status Chris indicated as "unmarried". Probably - like them! And Chris - married. Dear our Russian women, who statistics ... But to hell with the statistics. Many of the guards, we felt sorry that it happened and even asked not to take guests through the famous city dump at Gornostai. We call it simply "hell", because it burns day and night, and even in the rain. And of course there lived mutants. In general, this article is about how well relax and surf in Vladivostok. ![]()

Surfing Vladivostok-style
I return to Shanghai on Wednesday. And while I am still in Vladivostok, and from time to time we go to "close the surf season. Gordeychuk Valera, the first surfer of Vladivostok, said that last year they rolled to the end of October. The waves are, and thus the season is still open. Yesterday we had a man 7. Some have already put on their caps. Some characters try surfing first, the second time in his life, despite the fact that in the mornings is pretty cool. Had an interesting experiment for surfing wetsuit for diving. Wetsuit for diving (in a bitter struggle) has proved that he ... diving. But rowing "in this expander" - excellent preparation for a new wheelchair. However, Nikita:) The water was warmer than I thought, but people - less. Perhaps it was our last barrow before my departure to China. I'm waiting for the surf in the Bay of Patroclus, but in general, pleased that it was possible to ride in the Shield, in Champsaur and even a little in Triozere. Will the new season and new wave. Thanks to Nikita for photos:
Then - more fotochki.
Notes from the Indian Ocean
For some time I've noticed in the waves of the rainbow. A very interesting phenomenon, for some reason before I had not seen him. It happens like this: when the wave passes, and broken, very fine water spray rising high into the air and - (!) - Over a wave or behind it for a few seconds there is a rainbow. A small and very personal rainbow. Has anyone else noticed?
A local Germans call me «math genius», because I have 30 seconds (during lunch after the first morning trolley) agreed number puzzle in which they unsuccessfully stuck for thirty minutes. Guys seem embarrassed and more puzzles me is not offered:)
Etched into my memory a random picture from Saturday's gurneys Spot Kedungu - Horses, German surfer girl and the boss Campa Kima Surfaris in Chiang - comes with the board to the ocean, blonde in black, and beautiful in its strength, movement spins in his hand lish as a lasso. This is a lasso for the waves.
