Santa Cruz Surf Jam
2-5 April in Hainan was Santa Cruz Surf Jam, organized Icon X in conjunction with Surfing Hainan. About Surfing Hainan you already, I think, have heard, but the Icon X began to take an active part in the development of surfing in China not so long ago. Icon X - is a chain of stores in China, specializing in the sale of equipment, apparel and accessories for skate, snowboard and other X-sports. They do not just sell, they ask, and promote a certain lifestyle lessons, demo sessions, local and international skaters, organization Camp and travel. The first shop opened Icon X skater from the United States Joe Eberlin (Joe Eberling) in 2002, I present a report from the scene of Matt Garcia (Matteo Garcia) from the Icon X, in Russian here, Original English version check here.
We are a little nervous about svella since April - the off-season and waves in the Bay of Hou Hai is highly variable. We arrived at the beach on Friday morning, 3rd April, and found that the waves were about twice as more of our expectations. But in Hou Hai is the place and the conditions suitable for training newbies (like me). Our instructors have provided more advanced riders boards Santa Cruz and were busy preparing newcomers to enter the water for the first wave. Despite the cold rain and strong wind in the morning, after lunch the weather improved and by the end of the day almost every (ie, all 40 of us) managed to catch, at least, a wave or two.
Sanya Travel Center about. Hainan boasts excellent nightlife, one of the best in China (the best, then, of course, in Shanghai - approx. Surfing China). We were based almost in its very center, so as to be able to study beach bars and streets. Let our first day of surfing was long, it did not prevent us to go into the night and get to know each other better (especially some of them) for a beer at the pub. Establishments in Sanya - for every taste, in Long Dong Hae, you can choose among Russian, American, Chinese and Western restaurants and bars. Most of all, after a drink we liked to bypass small dots barbecue along the street, where grilled fresh seafood. And they work around 11 pm to 5 am. Skewer, you can see almost everything that could meet the sea. Why are these barbecue can catch only at night - a mystery to me, but after a couple of Youth - it's just perfect. If Shanghai were so cheap and delicious outdoor barbecue, I'd be fat as I do not know who.
On the second day (Saturday), many of us have learned the basics and have been able to practice on the waves themselves. We arrived at the beach in the afternoon, with the expectation that the remaining strength at the party around the campfire on the beach. Weather pleased with the blue sky, more user-friendly waves and large keg of beer. Erbi (Arbee) from Hong Kong showed how to anneal and catch more waves than all the other guys. Marco (Marco) also gave excellent surfing along with Dave (Dave), which flew longborde.
At sunset, we remarkably relaxed around the campfire with BBQ seafood and live music performed by the team Surfing Hainan, which brings together, it seems, not only the best surfers in China, but canceling musicians. Guy from Scotland tuned our beer wave of Scottish tunes, and Brendan, the founder of Surfing Hainan, play our favorite old songs. It was one of our best nights, however, difficult to spoil the evening when you're on the yarn around the campfire in the company of wonderful people, and more besides drunk (or happy) enough to ignore the 10 thousand mosquitoes attacking all your cracks. Wade (Wade) played some good old Australian songs in the bus on the way back (well, in general, they were variations on the theme of Australian songs, but we all liked it). All returned to the hotel tired, but whole-intact and ready for new achievements.
On our last day (Sunday) we again lucky with the conditions: the sky, waves and energy provided another memorable surf session. Erbi again showed approximately stretcher and gave us useful advice. Both Tom caught the most waves, and Jackie (Jacky) methodically dissected waves on shortborde. We took off my hat to Brian (Bryan), which sometimes ran to ride in the breaks between sessions on quality control in factories Burton (that's why Burton continues to supply us with, perhaps, the world's best board for snowboarding).
Sunday was a remarkable conclusion of our three-day surf Camp. Almost no one was hurt (except my legs chopped), serious progress of pupils and excellent facilities have made this trip one of the best in the history of Icon X. And it says a lot. If you missed this event, it means you have passed by something significant (in this place in SurfingChina sigh). Join us next time, but next time - must be!
Special thanks for organizing the event: Santa Cruz, Brendan Sheridan, Fu Rong, Surfing Hainan, Su Ching and Joe Eberlin. Icon X, together with similar guys create surf culture of China, and this is a hell of a job, my friends.
