Wonders happen when.../Чудеса бывают тогда...
...when you are ready to face them.
...когда ты к ним готов.
Once (after a really frightening flight, almost kissing the ground) I said I will never ever fly with Garuda Indonesia again!
Another time (after my forth trip to Bali last year) I declared: «I'm done with Bali!»
Well, life proved me wrong and this time in a very nice and generous way: I accidentally (thanks to Marina!) won round-trip plane tickets to Bali by... Garuda Indonesia! Business Class!
Leaving on Saturday, August 28. Thrilled to get back to the Ocean (still scared of flying with Garuda though).
Однажды (после одного страшного полета, чуть не целуя землю) я сказала: «Никогда больше в жизни я не полечу авиакомпанией Гаруда».
В другой раз (после моей 4-й поездки на Бали в прошлом году) я заявила, что всё — теперь-то мне уже точно хватит Бали.
Жизнь показала, что я была не права, причем очень милым способом: я случайно (спасибо Марине!) выиграла авиабилеты туда-обратно на Бали... Гарудой! Бизнес-классом!
Лечу в субботу, 28 августа. В предвкушении новой встречи с океаном (а лететь Гарудой все равно страшненько)

Zhujiajian Diaries/Записки о. Чжуцзяцзянь
Ningbo «local» surfer Jon Sims has sent a new update on surf in ZhiJiaJian:
There is a swell this weekend but it is coming from the south as it has been since wednesday. I actually went for a surf on wednesday afternoon and it was quite small... A few sets coming thru but no power. A good beginners break but not much else.
Funnily enough a «life guard» walked up to where I was surfing and started blowing his whistle until someone wiser filled him in. The silly thing was the waves were so small that he could have pretty much walked out to where I was and chatted with me.
The way things are shaping up, the surf this weekend looks to be about the same, maybe a tad bigger but it is probably going to be blown messy...
I'll probably still go though...

Surfing in Zhujiajian this weekend/Серф на острове Чжуцзяцзянь на этих выходных
Yesterday I received an email from Jon, a Ningbo expat who is the expert on surfing in Zhoushan/Zhujiajian Island area, saying that it looks like good surf in Zhujiajian this weekend. We haven't met in person yet, but I really appreciate Jon's surf updates. So if you are in Shanghai and thinking where to go to catch some mellow waves and relax on the beach this weekend, Zhujiajian seems to be a nice option.
Вчера я получила емейл от Джона, экспата из Нинбо, который хорошо знает серфинг в островной зоне Чжоушань/Чжуцзяцзянь. В его письме говорилось, что по прогнозам на этих выходных грядет хороший серф в Чжуцзяцзянь. Мы с ним никогда раньше не встречались лично, но я ему признательна за серф информацию с мест. Так что если вы находитесь в Шанхае и думаете, куда бы податься на выходных, чтобы поймать несколько волн и расслабиться на пляже, то Чжуцзяцзянь может быть отличным вариантом.

If you want to go to Zhoushan Island, go to Ningbo and then cross the bridge to Zhoushan. Cross Zhoushan to Zhujiajian Island. Then to Dong Sha. The best part is the Northern part of dong sha.
Waves tend to break best with South Easterly winds. Easterly can work too. Google Earth will show you location but my version has not yet included the Zhoushan Bridge.
Alternatively you can fly directly to Zhujiajian from Shanghai.
There are busses from Ningbo Jiangbei Bus terminal which will take you to Shenjia Men, and from there you catch another taxi or bus.
I live next to the exit of the bridge at Zhenhai so it takes me just over one hour to drive there.
You were here last year, september. The swell was messy.

The wetsand surf forecast is a little easier to read... Better colours but both of them tend to predict the same thing. Wetsand tends to forecast swell while magic seaweed seems to actually forecast the surf... Obviously surf is harder to forecast for each particular beach!
The beach breaks best on a rising tide from low tide upwards.
Winds tend to be onshore but every now and then amazing things happen.
Winter surfing is not too bad at all... A full length spring suit (2 or 3mm) is enough as water temps don't dip much below 15deg C by the looks of things.

First Russian Surfer Found! Найден первый русский Серфер!
I accidently found out who was the first surfer in Russia!
Last Sunday I was browsing the artworks of Konstantin Vasilyev who was a famous Russian artist and left more than 400 paintings, one of his favorite themes was ancient Russian epic, fold art and mythology.
Suddenly I ran into this:

This is Sadko escaping from the Underwater Kingdom where he played gusli (traditional Russian musical instrument) for the Sea King (Tsar). Sadko was first mentioned in Novgorod chronicles in 1167.
Это Садко на пути из Подводного Царства, где он играл на гуслях для Морского Царя и так его развеселил, что царь пустился в пляс, да так что море разбушевалось. Первые упоминания о Садко были замечены в новгородских летописях в районе 1167 года. То есть серфинг — древнее русское народное искусство 
I find Konstantin Vasilyev’s art very powerful. Or is it just a сall of Slavic roots?
Anyway I would definitely like to put some of his paintings on the walls of my house. When I have one.

Epic day in Hainan: when Hainan turned into Chinese Uluwatu
Usually Hainan is not able to compete with the famous Balinese surf spot Uluwatu in terms of surfing conditions.

John Callahan's pictures of surf in China
News:
The 2nd Russian Surfing Championship has started in Bali these days.
The Russian pavilion at the World EXPO 2010 in Shanghai has welcomed the 2 millionth visitor. Overall amount of EXPO visitors already exceeded 20 million. That's around 400 thousand people everyday. That's like a half of my hometown's population! This summer I swim in human ocean here in Shanghai.
And my hometown Vladivostok celebrates its 150 anniversary today! Vladivostok is one of a few places in Russia where you can surf. Love you!

«Before Zhujiajian I went to Shengsi island which is closer to Shanghai pushed by this article.
Wetsand foresaw 10 feet swell with period 9s, it was late october. I found 30 cm, windy, mellow waves and pure chocolate water. Unsurfable.
Zhujiajian is much better at least for water quality which is acceptable. It was almost flat anyway. I went there departing from Nanpu bridge by bus, 5h to get to Ningbo to catch a ferry to Zhoushan island and then reach zhujiajian by taxi through the bridge that connect it to zhoushan. Total trip time: more than 6 hours. Exhausting.»
Note: Direct flight to Bali from Shanghai takes about 5 hours.

Российский павильон на Всемирной выставке ЭКСПО 2010 в Шанхае принял на днях 2-миллионного посетителя. А вся эта ЭКСПО — уже 20 миллионов. Этим летом я живу в человеческом океане.
Владивостоку сегодня исполняется 150 лет.
Среднюю (и в общем-то главную) часть поста я написала на русском и случайно удалила. Набирать заново не набирается. Пост на английском, надеюсь, получился понятный всем.
Хозяйке на заметку: прямой рейс Шанхай-Бали занимает часов 5.

World Ocean Day/Всемирный День Океана
Yesterday was a holiday: June 8 — World Ocean Day. It had been unofficially celebrated every year since 1992, officially — since 2009. I may say that we've celebrated it h
ere in Shanghai as well: the USA Pavilion at World Expo 2010 exhibited the World's Largest Aloha Shirt straight from Hawaii! I spotted it on my way back home from Expo and smiled once its hugeness and chilloutness (is there a word?) came into my vision. Appreciated!

Вчера был праздник: 8 июня — Всемирный день Океана. Он отмечался неофициально каждый год с 1992, а официально — с 2009 года.
Мы тут в Шанхае, можно сказать, его тоже отметили: Американский павильон на Всемирной выставке ЭКСПО вывесил у себя на площадке Самую Большую В Мире Гавайскую Алоха-Рубашку — прямиком с Гаваев! Я заметила ее по дороге с Экспо домой и тут же улыбнулась, когда она, такая гигантская, по-доброму дурацкая и позитивная попалась мне на глаза. Не знаю как китайцы, а я оценила!

Taylor Steele's Castles in the Sky
On May 18, a premier of Taylor Steele’s new movie, Castles In The Sky was held in LA. I’m a big fan of Taylor Steele’s works.
If you look at the poster for Castles In The Sky you will see that it stars India, Peru, Vietnam, Africa, and Iceland. A bit odd, considering that there are some big name surfers in the movie, including Mike Losness who went on a surf trip to Vladivostok fall 2009. But while the surf stars in the film are A-listers, they aren’t really the stars; the film is more about the land and cultures that they visit – a visual journey through a global tapestry. 18 мая в Лос-Анджелесе прошла премьера одного из самых ожидаемых мной серф-фильмов Castles in the Sky от Тэйлора Стила (Taylor Steele), работы которого я вообще очень люблю. В Castles in the Sky показаны Индия, Перу, Вьетнам, Африка и Исландия. На поиск редких серфовых уголков и работу над фильмом ушло 3 года. Китай вот, к сожалению, не попал в число «уголков». Ну правда в предшественнике Castles in the Sky — Sipping Jetstreams -уже засветился Гонконг, а Гонконг уже 13 лет, как Китай.
В фильме снялись серферы с громкими именами, в том числе и известный нам по серф-трипу во Владивосток Майк Лознесс (Mike Losnes). Clouds in the Sky – это не просто серф-видео, это визуальное путешествие, погружение в разные культуры мира и красивый серфинг в исполнении как pro, так и местных серферов. Картина, полная цвета, жизни и волн.

Invasion of Shandong
A place to be for surfers in China this week is Shandong province. Crazy wind has generated monstrous waves who are known to attack ships, people, buildings and even cars on the streets of seaside cities Weihai and Yantai. Sadly, there are death cases... No surfers were spotted in water. Would you dare to go surfing in such conditions? Watch these invaders:

Место, где нужно быть серферам в Китае на этой неделе, — провинция Шаньдун. Ураганный ветер вызвал к жизни огромные и мощные волны, которые нападают на корабли, людей, здания и даже машины на улицах прибрежных городов Вэйхай и Яньтай. К сожалению, есть смертельные случаи... Серферы в воде замечены не были. А ты бы отважился серфить в таких условиях? Посмотрите на этих захватчиков:
